All-New Lumina Awesome Style, Power and Performance

Muscat, Oman As part of Chevrolet’s most powerful range ever, the launch of the all-new 2007 Chevrolet Lumina S and SS reinforces the brand’s leading position and reputation for extreme driving performance, marking yet another riveting chapter in the history of Chevrolet in the Oman.

The design of the new Lumina exploits the benefits of a large rear-wheel-drive platform, delivering classic proportion and athletic stance. It is a new and exciting architecture that holds true to the vision. It includes subtle sporting details that are indicative of the car’s image and a tribute to the brand’s motorsport heritage.

In the interior, the design philosophy is one of a cocooned space with a serpentine plan view of the instrument panel that enhances the feeling of spaciousness while presenting the centre stack controls to the driver within easy reach, adding to the all round feeling of comfort and ease.

More power, more torque and more refinement characterise the engines of the Lumina S and SS. The 3.6 litre V6 engine is available in the new Lumina S and delivers a standard peak power of 240hp (net) at 6000rpm and peak torque of 335Nm. The Generation IV all-alloy 6.0 litre V8 EFI engine is standard on the Lumina SS and delivers a whopping peak power of 360hp (net) at 5700rpm and peak torque of 520 Nm.  Until now, the 6.0LV8 engine had been available only in the iconic Chevrolet Corvette. It is one of the most advanced and technically accomplished engines General Motors has ever produced.

Chevrolet has taken a world -recognised performance powertrain and made it even better thanks to a major upgrade programme. This has created significant improvements in the reduction of noise, vibration and harshness on the 6.0L V8 engine without effecting performance levels. And when combined with the new six-speed manual transmission, optional on the Lumina SS, the result is an awesome display of harnessed raw power and control.

The V8 engine on the Lumina SS is matched to a dual exhaust, quad outlet system which generates up to 12% lower back pressure. The benefit is enhanced gas flow efficiency which helps to deliver increased power and torque.

The ultra reliable six-speed manual V8 transmission has benefited from revisions which have sharpened shift quality, smoothness, response, acceleration, overtaking performance and overall feel.

A near 50:50 weight distribution between the front and the rear on the all-new Lumina also contributes to the feeling of a superbly well-balanced car. This has been attained through several enhancements including a lower and rearward positioning of the engine within its bay, a new saddle–style fuel tank and a relocated battery.

Linear Control Suspension is a standard feature on both the Lumina S and SS. The front suspension is a McPherson strut-based multi-link system with direct acting stabilizer bar, while the rear features a four-link independent system with coil-over shock absorbers and decoupled stabiliser bar.

It has high lateral stiffness for handling through three lateral ball joints per side with improved longitudinal compliance. A rubber isolated suspension frame isolates the body from road bumps and drive train vibrations. The front suspension is fully adjustable in camber, castor and toe and at the rear, while the rear suspension is fully adjustable for camber and toe. Sports suspension settings are standard on the S and SS.Larger wheel and tyre packages and a revised forward mounted steering rack are among other major new features included to improve the vehicles' fundamental dynamics.

The brakes feature lightweight compact aluminum calipers, increased pad area and larger ventilated discs to reduce stopping distances by around 5%, increase fade resistance and offer the driver a more responsive brake pedal.

Bigger tyres have been developed which improve handling and longitudinal grip for easier acceleration and shorter stopping distance. The SS comes with 18" alloy wheel, while the S is fitted with 17" alloy wheels.

The new Lumina SS has shorter gear ratios – three to eight per cent overall – while increased synchronizer capacity in all gears reduces effort and allows faster shifts. An all-new fully isolated remote shifter reduces noise and cuts vibration levels, the shift travel has been reduced by eight per cent and the clutch pedal travel reduced 25 mm to 140 mm, requiring a lighter touch to change gear. Slip differential with multi-plate clutch system is standard.

An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system has been incorporated in the Lumina SS to boost safety and ensure the balance of power and performance is in perfect harmony.  ESP technology reduces the risk of an accident by preventing the vehicle from skidding in an emergency by specifically slowing down individual wheels. At the same time, with the aid of numerous sensor data like the position of the accelerator pedal, steering and yaw angle, it consistently compares the driver's actions with the actual driving situation. If it detects a critical deviation, the system intervenes immediately.

Over steer is corrected by braking the front wheel on the outside of the curve, while under steer is remedied by slowing down the inside rear wheel.ESP can, if required, incorporate a whole number of other safety functions apart from the traction control system, all of which are controlled via the fast CAN-BUS data line with a transmission rate of up to 500 KBit/second.

Improvements have been made to reduce noise and complement engine upgrade. The engine now sits in a far stiffer and stronger cradle, significantly reducing noise and vibration as well as isolating noise. The engine is rigidly attached at six points rather than four, adding torsional and bending stiffness to the car and improving the engine's ability to withstand damage in the event of a collision.

Both the V6 and V8 engines deliver extremely competitive fuel efficiency despite increased power gains across the range. New fuel efficiency measures have been added and include a more efficient differential, regulated voltage control to cut alternator power consumption and increased tyre pressure to reduce rolling resistance. A new engine management system, with digital sensors for crank and camshaft positions significantly contributes to greater fuel efficiency.
