The Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive
has a unique layout, where the drivetrain is in a
direct line from the compact, low-vibration Horizontally-Opposed
Engine, SUBARU BOXER. With a low centre of gravity,
there is almost equal left-right balance, and excellent
forward-rear balance. It is a highly original mechanism,
befitting a team of technical experts whose technology
is based on that of an aircraft manufacturer. This
innate superb balance brings overwhelmingly superior
base performance for both drive performance and operating
stability under a variety of driving conditions,
including on dry, wet, rough and snowy roads.
All the Symmetrical AWD systems
feature the full-time Active Torque Split transfer
system, taking control of vehicle dynamics in order
to give those behind the wheel confidence and a pleasurable
driving experience. Subaru’s AWD technology is characterized
by its enhancement of torque split technology between
front and rear wheels. Abounding in AWD expertise
for passenger vehicles, Subaru currently has four
types of AWD torque split system available. Each
is selected in accordance with the character of the
model, with two for the manual and two for the automatic
transmission.
The SUBARU BOXER (Horizontally-Opposed
Engine), which is an essential part of the Symmetrical
AWD, is already in its 40th year. With a highly original
engine and the Symmetrical AWD at its core, the safety-conscious
body is both lightweight and rigid, and the suspension
technology has matured over many years. Improving
base individual performance for each vehicle has
given birth to “driving pleasure, backed up by a
high level of overall safety performance”, which
is common throughout all Subaru vehicles. Furthermore,
using the severe FIA WRC stage as a proving ground,
this technology has been polished and matured leading
to a higher dimension of performance, which is continually
fed back into standard passenger car use.
In addition to the philosophy of
“Active Driving, Active Safety”, which is a part
of the general Subaru desire to create “a vehicle
which gives pleasure to all who drive it”, Subaru
is aiming to progress further, and to pioneer worldwide
technological innovation.
