Subaru strove to create a third generation vehicle resounding with perfection for drivers all over the world, and the basic performance of the vehicle was greatly improved. Design, comfort, environmental impact and driving performance have all been improved in a move sure to make the 07MY Legacy even more irresistible than ever before.

The Legacy Sedan manages to meld a sporty mind into a sedan body without compromising interior comfort. Through the use of the Active Valve Control System (AVCS) in the cam drive system, it is possible to maintain flat torque not only during high-speed operation, but also during low- and mid-speed operation. This is a highly user-friendly vehicle, which realises improved fuel economy and easier city driving.

The Legacy 2.0R engine is a Horizontally-Opposed 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre beast with DOHC. To achieve the optimal power from the Horizontally-Opposed Engine, which offers superior revolution balance, a broad spectrum of technology has been incorporated. For instance, five-bearing system grips the lightweight, compact crank shaft from both sides in five places. The fifth bearing support section is moulded into the steel-made journal aluminium block, thus preventing changes in sound quality even when the engine temperature changes.

The valve mechanism is direct-type DOHC, which has less mechanical parts than that with rocker arms. Shim-less tappets mean less weight, thus leading to less stress for the engine — right up to high rev counts. Also, by using an Active Valve Control System (AVCS) cam drive system and stabilising combustion throughout the entire revolution spectrum, the Legacy ensures high-end power without compromising low-and mid-end fuel efficiency and torque. Furthermore, by using a 4-2-1 equal length, constant pulsation exhaust system and large-capacity twin-tail muffler, not only has the performance been improved, a totally unique, clear exhaust sound has been created.

Subaru has debuted its mechanical braking support system that reacts to the velocity of depression of the brake pedal in the 2.0R models. In emergency braking situations, panicked use of brakes often leads to swift depression of the brake pedal, but not firm depression, thus resulting only in a soft braking manoeuvre. The brake assist system increases the brake booster pressure in accordance to the speed and degree of depression of the brake pedal, and provide enough brake pressure in case of emergency.

The key areas of vehicle dynamics, in terms of agility, stability and traction, are actively controlled by the innate construction of low yaw inertia and AWD technology provided by the Symmetrical AWD system. On top of this, Subaru incorporates the Vehicle Dynamics Control System as an additional safeguard device that activates in case the vehicle descends into a spinning condition. Through the various sensors that monitor the speed of each wheel and the longitudinal/lateral G and yaw moment, etc., the Vehicle Dynamics Control System regulates the engine power and sustains the vehicle stability by controlling both the brake pressure to each individual wheel and the AWD torque split ratio.

In the case of an accident, the high level of passive safety with the Legacy reduces any injuries to the occupants. The core of this safety is Subaru’s unique “Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames” body. Each pillar and side frame of the body is connected in a cage shape, strongly surrounding the cabin. This special shape effectively absorbs collision energy, preventing deformation of the cabin. In the case of a frontal collision, the front side frame, which extends from the cabin straight through to the bumper, contributes to absorbing the energy, and the SUBARU BOXER, which is installed at a low position, slides toward the rear along the floor tunnel.

The 07MY Legacy features improved body strength in order to further perfect the distinct Legacy driving experience and provide an even higher level of driving comfort. Reinforcement of the front suspension attachment points, front frame supports and other areas are an illustration of the tunings that have allowed Subaru to achieve an improvement in both operational stability and driving comfort.

The 07MY Legacy has undergone a design change that ensures it maintains its popular striking silhouette while incorporating a new design with emphasis on the quality that a superior vehicle like the Legacy carries. Each model comes with a unique bumper to give it an individual expression.

Based on a hawk’s eye motif, the headlamps inherit their predecessors’ sharp design. With character lines that sweep sharply along to the front fenders, the design takes on an edgy feeling. Design elements extend to the headlamp interior, with parking lights being made into a J-shape and bent around the main headlamps. Turn signals take on a sharp form evocative of pure crystal to give off a splendid sparkle.

The front grille further emphasises the wing motif design while achieving a further impression of width. The front bumper features character lines that continue on from the bonnet to give an image of strength and continuity.

A compact rear combination lamp design placed high on the vehicle gives a more toned look to its “hips” and emphasises the width of the Legacy Sedan. A chrome-plated moulding has been added to the lower edge of the lamps to give a high-quality finish. Additionally, incorporating rear fog lamps into the bumper has helped achieve a sportier design.
