  HYUNDAI GLOBAL SALES UP IN 2006  
 
 
     
 

It was another record-setting year for Hyundai Motor Co. as worldwide sales reached 2,663,998 units. Overseas sales reached 2,082,906 units whereas domestic sales went up to 581,092 units.

Hyundai’s Elantra once again claimed the title of Hyundai’s best-selling car worldwide. Santa Fe was an absolute winner in popularity in all the markets that it was introduced. Sonata, Tucson and Accent were the other leading models.

Overseas Sales

Hyundai has shipped 1,197,077 units to overseas in 2006. Hyundai’s overseas manufacturing operations in India,Turkey,China and the United States sold 885,829 units, up 32.1 percent year on year.

Domestic Passenger Cars, Minivans & SUVs

Led by the new Sonata, domestic sales of passenger cars were up 7.2 percent to 326,792 units. In 2006 sales of passenger cars, SUVs and minivans reached 427,488 units, up 2.9 percent year on year.

Overall Sales in Percentages

In percentage terms the worldwide sales jumped 5.1 percent over 2005. Overseas sales rose by 6.1 percent while domestic sales rose 1.8 percent.

2007 Target

Hyundai has set as its 2007 target worldwide sales of 2.735 million units. Overseas manufacturing subsidiaries will see output rise to 1,020,000 units while domestic plants will export 1,085,000 units.

“The top priority of 2007 is to implement the ‘customer oriented’ management and to stabilize the ‘global management’ which is beginning to take root in worldwide sites such as US, China, India and Europe” said Chung Mong-Koo, chairman of Hyundai Motor Co., in a speech delivered to its employees earlier today. In order to do this, Hyundai motor aims to enhance marketing capability and brand value while increasing its quality and profitability by cutting costs and having system management in place.


Chairman Chung also stated that 2007 will be the very crucial year for Hyundai to become the global leader in the automotive industry. To achieve this goal, “we must build the effective communication network between  headquarters and global production and sales division to generate the maximum synergy effect”, Chairman Chung said in the statement.
