The Chevrolet Tahoe built on GM’s full-size SUV platform, really does deliver for drivers who need the practicality of a full-size SUV, and this is especially relevant to the Middle East’s legion of SUV drivers. In the case of the Tahoe, a smooth appearance doesn't mean a softer stance.

The Tahoe blends sharp driving, excellent power and segment-leading fuel efficiency with generous interior refinement and quietness. With three trim levels—LS, LT and LTZ—and four-wheel drive models, it is ideal for active drivers, large families and those who need to go off the track. All models come equipped with a wide range of safety, comfort and convenience features.

The Tahoe’s body is designed around rounded lines. The front lower fascia is fully wrapped to eliminate air-grabbing gaps. Other effective aerodynamic features include doors that wrap over the rocker panels, a steeply raked windscreen and a radio antenna that is built into the rear quarter-window. Even the lip on the fuel filler door has been designed for maximum efficiency.

Chevrolet’s gold bow-tie takes pride of place in the centre of the twin-port horizontal grille, with a body-coloured surround inset with an argent texture mesh. Fog lamps and headlamps feature jewel-like optics, while the lower fascia, incorporating the front license plate holder and integrated tow hooks, is aggressively styled with a skid plate look that enhances Tahoe’s rugged, off-road appearance.

The Tahoe’s spacious interior exudes quality, precision and comfort. Low-gloss materials are used for the instrument panel and other trim, and chrome accents on instruments and vents further accentuate its luxury feel.

Flush-mounted accessories and controls, such as the climate control and radio within the centre stack, create a seamless, single-unit appearance. Also, there is almost no exposed metal hardware or latches.The dashboard and instrument panel sit low and forward to accommodate the steeply raked windshield. Auxiliary input for iPods, and MP3-capable CD players are standard on the in-car stereo across all models.

The LTZ has front cooled perforated leather bucket seats. Customers can also choose these options on the LT trim levels. A 6-way power front passenger seat adjuster can also be specified, while manual lumbar adjust are standard on LS and LT. Automatic Headlamp Control is standard on all models as are head curtain airbags.

All three rows offer spacious seating, with even adults accommodated comfortably in the third row. Third-row seats can be removed quickly to take full advantage of the Tahoe's cargo carrying capabilities. Even with the third row in place, there is still 478.6 litres of cargo space available. Even the optional, ceiling-mounted rear-seat DVD entertainment system has been designed to take up less space.

Power-adjustable pedals help fit the Tahoe to drivers of varying stature. So does the extended fore-aft travel for the driver's seat. But even with more front-seat travel, a tall person has room in the second row because of the sculpted front-seat backs.

Even in its standard form, the Tahoe's interior is extremely comfortable and roomy, and can accommodate all sorts of equipment—standard and optional—along with features from power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seats, a remote vehicle starting system that allows drivers to start cooling the interior prior to entry, Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist, a standard rear view camera system, side curtain airbags and brand new infotainment systems for 2010.  

Depending on the trim level, Tahoe owners can enjoy a new audio system that comprises a Bose Premium seek-and-scan AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback, accompanied by nine speakers and centre-console sub-woofer. It is compatible with Radio Data System (RDS) and incorporates speed-compensated volume, Theftlock, an auxiliary input jack, USB port and 36 cross-band presets. The Parking Assist rearview camera is standard when the Tahoe is ordered with the DVD navigation system, which is optional on the LTZ only; for all other trim levels, it comes embedded in the rear view mirror. 

Out on the road, the Tahoe feels taut for a full-size SUV, and the steering is precise and responsive and the brakes are precise and smooth. At highway speeds it is quiet and comfortable.

Building on the off-road pedigree of the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Z71 version features large recovery hook openings, prominent rectangular fog lamps and specific grille texture and platinum chrome trim. Also forming part of the package are 18-inch wheels and on-road/off-road tyres. It’s a true off-roading vehicle with wide-ranging capabilities; the Z71 also has an approach angle of 24 degrees as well as a strong skid plate.

For further protection, the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology is standard on all models. With this, sensors continuously monitor the vehicle’s side-to-side angle, triggering stability-maintaining action if the angle indicates a possible rollover situation. If it gauges this is likely, the system can trigger the roof-rail air bags before the incident occurs to provide passengers with increased protection. The Tahoe is equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners that activate to hold the driver and front-seat passenger in proper position not only in a frontal crash, but also in a severe rear impact.

The Tahoe employs four-wheel disc brakes and a rack-and-pinion steering system, with its rack mounted on an engine cross member, that provides more immediate and precise response when turning the steering wheel.

Extensive attention to detail has been paid by Tahoe’s engineers to ensure a quiet driving experience. It starts with a stiff frame, which reduces vibrations transmitted to the passenger cabin. The strength and accuracy of the full-boxed frame also enables more precise mounting and tuning of chassis and suspension components, which helps reduce vibration. Even the tyres on the large wheels were designed to reduce noise. Seventeen-inch wheels come standard with the LS while 20-inch wheels are optional on the LT and standard on the LTZ.

Noise-reducing components and materials are used throughout the body structure, including the headliner material, door seals and front-of-dash area. The engine also features a quiet-tuned alternator and an acoustically tuned engine cover that dramatically reduces interior engine noise. Even the door seals help reduce seal pull-away at highway speeds, which can cause wind noise. The Tahoe also incorporates details such as spray-in expanding foam, which helps reduce noise by filling in space to eliminate sound paths. Tahoe’s quietness and smoothness are complemented by capabilities that full-size SUV customers depend on.
 

Powering the Tahoe line-up is a new, iron-block Vortec 5.3-litre SFI V8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology. This unit is capable of generating 320 hp (net) at 5,200 rpm. Its torque output is equally impressive with figures of and 454 Nm (net) at 4,400 rpm.This engine helps give the Tahoe the segment’s best fuel efficiency – better than any other full-size SUV. 

The Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed is standard on all models. It enhances real world fuel efficiency on the highway via reduced engine speed, as the engine requires less fuel to operate at a lower cruising speed with electronic overdrive and Driver Shift Control. This feature allows drivers to up- and downshift clutchlessly through gear-knob controls.
